Alexandria, Louisiana, is a city that is almost in the exact geographic center of the state. Its population as of the 2000 census was 46,342. Alexandria was named in honour of Alexander Fulton, on whose grant from Spain the first settlement was made in 1785; it was first incorporated as a town in 1818 and received a city charter in 1882
During the Civil War (May, 1864), Alexandria was put to the flames by federal troops.
There are plenty of sights to see and places to visit in Alexandria. One of the main attractions is the Kent House, as it was built in 1800, making it the oldest structure in the heart of Louisiana. The Alexandria Zoo has over 500 animals including many endangered species.
The Mardi Gras au Coeur de la Louisianne (Mardi Gras in the Heart of Central Louisiana) is held annually since its beginnings in 1994.
Having only started with 10 floats and participation of 4 Mardi Gras Krewes it now boasts 22 floats and 14 Mardi Gras Krewes. Make sure that you are one of the 120,000 people that attends the next parade!
The Port of Alexandria has expanded and the England Industrial Airpark has been given special acclaim. The Riverfront Convention Center offer on of the largest exhibit areas in the state of Louisiana.
